A Sweet Sampling from Blackmarket Bakery

It’s no secret that I love farmers markets.  I love looking at all the different food vendors, people watching, and of course walking around soaking up the California sunshine.

Today the market was packed, and with temps looking to hit 95 today, it’s no wonder people were quickly gathering their produce for the week before it got too hot.  The vendors were extra cheery today too – I was handed 2 peaches to enjoy as “samples.”  I happily accepted the free fruit and quickly stashed them in my bag along with some fresh peaches, plums and oranges.

As I continued to wander in and out of the stalls I noticed a sign for Blackmarket Bakery, which has been touted as one of the best bakeries around in Orange County.

Blackmarket is known for being more ecclectic than your traditional bakery – aprons have pirate swords on them with the words “bite me,” and the bakers are described as OC’s most notorious. I’ve had this bakery on my radar for awhile now, but haven’t had a chance to try out the goods.  Until now.

From the brioche to the savory foccacia pockets it took all my resistance not to purchase everything in site.  Finally I decided on a Chocolate Raspberry Scone and an Almond Croissant as my first two Blackmarket baked goods.  The Bazaar Twist with pistachios, orange zest and caramel was also calling my name but I decided to wait until next time to try that bad boy.

Once I arrived home with the treats the Englishman and I could not wait to try them out.  Since we are both big scone fans, we decided to go with that one first.

The scone was nice and crumbly, and was loaded with raspberry flavor with hints of chocolate.  I also liked that the scone wasn’t too sweet either.  This would be perfect with some butter or fruit jam.

Of course we couldn’t just let the Almond Croissant sit there all by its lonesome, so naturally it had to be sampled as well.

I think this was my favorite of the two – it was so light and buttery and I LOVED the diced almonds and almond paste.  It’s really hard to find a good croissant around these parts and Blackmarket Bakery was right on the money.

If I wasn’t a believer in Blackmarket Bakery before I am now.  You can just tell that everything is homemade and fresh and that the bakery uses high quality ingredients.  I’m already planning a trip to their headquarters to get my hands on that bazzar pastry and perhaps some brioche as well.  And if you are looking to order a cake for a special occassion, Blackmarket has a special online ordering system so you can customize your cake just the way you like it.

And if that isn’t enough, Blackmarket Bakery offers cooking classes! (I think I’m in love).  Be sure to check out their website to see the different cooking class options they offer – I already have my eye on the Favorite Pumpkin Desserts one…
